Former US Defense Secretary Ashton Carter died on Tuesday. He took office at the end of Barack Obama’s term, between February 2015 and January 2017, and helped oversee US military strategies against the Islamic State in Syria and Iraq.
Since leaving the civil service, Carter has led the research center Belfer Center for Science and International Affairs at Harvard University.
