The Russian-appointed Kherson authorities removed his statue

The Russian-appointed Kherson authorities the remains of Prince Potemkin were removed from the church of Saint Catherine and removed his statue, the head of the annexed region said Vladimir Saldo.

The website of Kherson “Most” published a photo that shows the empty base on which Potemkin’s statue stood before the city was captured by the Russian army.

Empress Catherine II’s lover, Prince Potemkin, is considered the founder of Kherson. His statue was placed there on the occasion of the 45th anniversary of his death in 1836, but was lost after the liberation of the city by the Soviet army during World War II. In 2003, a copy of the historical statue was placed in its place. Recently the Russian-controlled Kherson authorities, according to Saldo, moved to the left bank of the Dnieper the statues of Russian soldier Alexander Suvorov and Admiral Fyodor Ushakov, as well as Hero of the Soviet Union Vasily Margelov.

“As a ‘gesture of goodwill’, when they left Kherson the Russians took with them the monuments of Suvorov and Usakov. We thank you, of course, for supporting our struggle against the consequences of Russification, but these issues should be resolved legally by the local Ukrainian authorities,” said the Ukrainian Minister of Culture Oleksandr Tkachenko commenting on the actions of the pro-Russian “authorities”.
