The 52-year-old Ekrem Imamoglou, who succeeded in the municipal elections to seize the politically valuable municipality of the Turkish metropolis from the hands of the ruling party, will be tried on the charge of “insulting” on November 11

For On November 11, the trial of the mayor of Istanbul, Ekrem Imamoglou, was postponed who will be tried in the Supreme Electoral Council of Turkey on her charge “insult”.

The 52-year-old Ekrem Imamoglu, who in the municipal elections managed to wrest the politically valuable municipality of the Turkish metropolis from the hands of the ruling Justice and Development Party (AKP) in two consecutive votes, is accused of insulting public officials in a speech he made for the re-run of the mayoral elections of 2019 which he won.

Specifically, a few months after the electoral victory, Ekrem Imamoglu declared that those who annulled his election were “idiots” – repeating the expression that a few hours earlier had been used against him by the Minister of the Interior Suleiman Soylu. The use of this characterization establishes the charge of “insult” that leads Ekrem Imamoglu before the Supreme Electoral Council of Turkey. In recent years, “insulting” has become the favorite charge of the Turkish leadership, which thus tries to neutralize its political opponents when it cannot accuse them of “terrorism”.

In case he is found guilty risk being punished with deprivation of his office and exclusion from civil life for four years.

“To put it bluntly, this is a political case…the sides of the dispute had a verbal confrontation after a political dispute. There was no mention of a public institution,” says the Istanbul mayor’s lawyer. Ekrem Imamoglu will be present at the hearing.

Today, hundreds of people gathered outside the building where Ekrem Imamoglu would be tried to express their support for the mayor of Istanbul.

The outcome of Turkey’s 2023 presidential and parliamentary elections is expected to be decided by the CHP and other opposition parties’ ability to join forces against Erdogan and his Islamist party, which has ruled the country for two decades.
