The Italian authorities refuse them disembarkation because their state of health does not present any problems and they are not women and children
Thirty-five migrants and refugees remaining on board Humanity 1 and 214 on board Geo Barents they refuse to eat and ask to be allowed to disembark at the port of Catania, where the two boats are, as reported by the Italian media.
According to the Italian authorities, however, refugees and immigrants cannot disembark because their health condition does not present any problems and they are not women and children.
Meanwhile, three migrants fell into the sea from the ship Geo Barents and tried to reach the jetty by swimming. They were given first aid and the two of them agreed to re-board the ship.
“The selection of immigrants is not based on their interests, but on the interests of the slave traders who transport them. The old, the poor and the sick stay in their countries. Those who come to Italy can give between 2,000 and 5,000 euros to the organizations that transport them,” said Italian Minister of Justice Carlo Nordio.
“We do not accept them because we are good but because we have accepted the whole situation. If we were good, we would take the poorest of the poor and the weakest of the sick,” added the Italian minister.
Finally, the European Commission, through its representative, emphasized that “there is a moral and legal obligation to rescue people at sea, based on international law”.
At the same time, according to the Italian news agency Ansa, Brussels underlined that “each case is different”, but “the time these people spend at sea must be reduced to a minimum”.
