The sharp and tough conservative about whom the Financial Times recently wrote: “DeSandis is Donald Trump with brains, but without the circus”
He expresses the most extreme positions on issues such as immigration, covid-19 and gender issues, while his opponents accuse him of lacking flash, charisma: Ron DeSandis, governor of Florida, is the rising star of the American right .
Much to the chagrin of Donald Trump. The former president, who sees DeSandis as his potential opponent in the 2024 presidential race, made a Wednesday vitriolic comment for him on the social networking site he founded, Truth Social.
“Shouldn’t I have said that in 2020 I had 1.1 million more votes than Ron D. this year?” he wrote referring to the 44-year-old governor’s triumphant re-election.
Trump has repeatedly insisted that it would be unwise for DeSandis to run against him for the Republican nomination. “If I’m up against him, I’m going to beat him like I beat everybody else,” he told Yahoo Finance in October.
“I believe that most will withdraw (from the race for the anointing), I believe that he will withdraw” he had added.
Yesterday the former president went a step further, going so far as to almost threaten DeSandis.
“I don’t know if he will run for office. I think if he does run, he might hurt himself a lot. I really think he can hurt himself a lot,” he noted. “I don’t think it will be good for the party,” he added.
Trump threatened to reveal “things about him that won’t be flattering – I know more about him than anyone else – except maybe his wife.”
The Financial Times recently wrote: “DeSandis is Donald Trump with brains, but without the circus,” commenting on the governor’s handling of Hurricane Ian’s devastating passage through Florida.
DeSandis had then welcomed US President Joe Biden with dignity, despite his political animosity towards him, and accepted federal aid.
A way to show his realism and perhaps differentiate himself from Trump, notorious for his lack of good manners and decency.
Harvard and Guantanamo
DeSandis was born into a middle-class family with Italian roots. He received degrees from Yale, where he was on the baseball team, and Harvard Law School.
He practiced law in the military and worked as a consultant at the Guantanamo Bay base and with elite groups of the US military in Iraq.
He quickly emerged as a sharp and tough conservative.
In 2011, he published a book titled “Dreams of the Fathers of the Nation”, a reference to former President Barack Obama’s autobiography “My Father’s Dreams”. In this book, DeSandis accused Obama of violating the country’s Constitution because of his “progressive” vision.
In 2012 he won a seat in the House of Representatives, where he was re-elected twice.
In 2018, he became governor of Florida, winning by a narrow majority. Then he appeared to be a supporter of Trump’s policies. In fact, in a campaign spot of his, he appeared to be climbing with his daughter on a wall of colored bricks, in a reference to the Republican former president’s plan to build a wall on the border with Mexico.
DeSandis rose to national prominence during the covid-19 pandemic by championing health measures.
He has also taken a stand in the “culture war” raging in US schools over the teaching of issues related to gender or racism.
2024
Recently DeSandis, like the Republican governors of Texas and Arizona, have sent illegal immigrants to Democratic cities in the northern and eastern US.
With the help of his wife Casey, a former TV presenter who advises him closely, and his three children – Madison, Mason and Mamie – he tries to soften the image of the aloof and cold politician.
There is an anecdote circulating in the American press that demonstrates his desire for isolation: Ron DeSandis on Capitol Hill walks the corridors wearing wireless headphones to avoid any unexpected conversation.
Good student, scion of the middle class who rose unaided, devoted husband who supported his wife when she was diagnosed with breast cancer, decorated veteran: the laudatory portrait painted of DeSandis by his supporters infuriates Trump.
“DeSandis exudes prestige,” commented political analyst Susan McManus.
“He always explains the plans he has and the reasons for them. While Trump can be divided and only speak for himself,” he added.
