Kherson, the major city in southern Ukraine recaptured today by Ukrainian forces after Russian forces withdrew, is “ours”, hailed Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky.
“Our people. Ours. Kherson,” Zelensky wrote on Telegram, accompanying his short message with the blue-and-yellow flag of Ukraine.
The Ukrainian military announced earlier today that it had “entered” Kherson with images coming from the city showing Ukrainian citizens celebrating in the streets.
The Ukrainian president stressed that special units of the armed forces are already inside the city.
“Today is a historic day. We are in the process of taking back Kherson,” he said in a video address. Other Ukrainian forces are stationed near the city, he added.
The liberation of Kherson comes after eight months of war.
