Bird Flu has ‘harvested’ turkeys in Britain

by

Huge disaster for poultry farmers – Half the birds, about 600,000 died due to Bird Flu

Around half of the free-range turkeys and geese raised in Britain for the Christmas holidays have died or been culled as a result of the outbreak bird flu in the country, as the head of industry reported today.

Richard Griffiths, the head of the British Poultry Council, told MPs that British poultry farmers typically produce 1.2-1.3 million free-range poultry over the festive period.

About 600,000 of these turkeys and geese contracted bird flu.

Speaking to its Environment, Food and Rural Affairs Committee House of Commons, Griffiths said the total production for the Christmas season usually reaches 8.5-9 million birds. Of these, about a million died or were massacred.

Griffiths noted that he does not know what effect this will have on prices.

Today, bird flu checks are carried out in 36% of UK poultry farms.
