Santa Catarina officials urged residents to avoid road travel as several areas declared a state of emergency
Heavy rains in recent hours have caused devastating floods in southern Brazil, where rescuers rushed to the state of Santa Catarina to evacuate hundreds of residents who were trapped in their homes.
In a video from the Civil Protection of the state, rescue operations with helicopters are recorded, since many houses remain “submerged” in the muddy water. More than 880 residents have been safely evacuated from flooded areas, local authorities said.
