According to a report by the non-governmental organization Reporters Without Borders (RSF)
The number of journalists held in prisons worldwide broke a record in 2022: They reached 533, in other words, their number increased by 45 from 2021, when a record high was already recorded, reveals a report released today by the government organization Reporters Without Borders (RSF).
The number of journalists killed (57) also increased (+18.8%), mainly due to the war in Ukraine, after falling to “historically low” levels in 2021 (48) and 2020 (50).
More than half of the journalists imprisoned internationally on December 1 are in five countries: China (110), Myanmar (62), Iran (47), Vietnam (39) and Belarus (31). .
Iran is the only country that was not among the top five last year, said the NGO, which has been publishing this annual tally since 1995.
But the Islamic Republic jailed an “unprecedented” number of media professionals in 20 years after mass protests broke out in September.
Thirty-four journalists were thus added to the thirteen who were already behind bars before the movement to challenge the clerical regime took place.
“Dictatorships” and “authoritarian regimes” seem determined and much more exonerated to throw journalists in prison, said Christophe Delois, the secretary general of the organization defending the freedom of the press.
In its annual report, RSF also highlights the unprecedented number of female journalists who have been jailed: 78 (compared to 60 last year).
“Women journalists now make up almost 15% of prisoners, while they represented less than 7% five years ago,” the NGO underlines.
