Peruvian President Dina Boluarte announced the replacement of her prime minister in a cabinet reshuffle less than two weeks after taking office.
The Andean country remains mired in political instability after a failed coup attempt last December 7 by populist leader Pedro Castillo, who ended up deposed and arrested.
Boluarte, his deputy, was sworn in on the same day as the country’s first female president. Since then, it has faced a series of violent protests that have left more than 25 people dead in clashes with the police.
On Friday (16), the Ministers of Education and Culture, Patricia Correa and Jair Perez, had already resigned from their positions due to the deaths of demonstrators.
Until the publication of this text, it was still not clear who would replace Pedro Miguel Angulo Arana as Prime Minister. Boluarte signaled that he would look for someone with a more political profile in order to facilitate negotiations with the opposition-controlled Congress.
“We will reformulate the cabinet, maybe it will be a more technical cabinet, but maybe it will be a slightly more political cabinet, which is capable of creating these bridges for dialogue”, said Boluarte on Sunday (18).
The president also stated that the ministerial exchanges would take place by this Tuesday (20).
Castillo’s inability to negotiate with Congress was the main justification given by the populist leader in calling for the closure of the Legislature and the calling of new elections. Congress ignored the chief executive’s requests, seen as unconstitutional, and voted to depose him.
Castillo himself made five cabinet changes in the 16 months he held the Presidency, a sign of his difficulties in governing.
Castillo was sentenced to 18 months in pretrial detention on rebellion and conspiracy charges.
