Zaporizhia station will never return to Ukrainian control, Yevgeny Balitsky says

Bombing of Ukraine’s Zaporizhia nuclear power plant has “virtually stopped,” he said the appointee from Russia regional governor of Zaporizhia, in southeastern Ukraine.

In statements he made on Russian state television, Mr Yevgeny Balitsky noted that Russian forces will not leave the nuclear power plant and that it will never return to Ukrainian control.

Zaporizhia station, the largest in Europe, was captured by Russian forces on Marchshortly after their invasion of Ukraine.

Fronts remain near the nuclear plant and it has repeatedly come under fire in recent months, raising concerns of a nuclear disaster. Moscow and Kyiv blame each other for the bombing of the facilities.

The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) is trying to secure an agreement on the safety of the Zaporizhia nuclear power plant by proposing the creation of a safety zone around it. Russian officials announced progress in talks with IAEA chief Rafael Grossi in Moscow on Thursday.
