Finjanji was remanded in custody for calling for an investigation into allegations that the Turkish military used chemical weapons in northern Iraq against Kurdistan Workers Party (PKK) fighters.
The president of the Medical Association of Turkey (TTB) Sebnem Korur Fincanci, who is on trial on charges of “terrorist propaganda”, will remain in custody until the next hearing on January 11, as an Istanbul court decided today.
Finjanci was remanded in custody in an Ankara prison on October 26 for calling for an investigation into allegations that the Turkish military used chemical weapons in northern Iraq against Kurdistan Workers Party (PKK) fighters. Such accusations have been made by pro-Kurdish media and opposition figures.
Ankara immediately denounced a “disinformation” campaign.
Finjanci, who was brought before the same Istanbul court last week, again denied the charges against her. “I will not defend myself (…) because what I did was not a crime but part of my job as a doctor,” he said.
If convicted, Finjanji could face up to 7.5 years in prison.
“If I am a terrorist, which terrorist organization am I a member of?” To the Human Rights Foundation or Doctors for Human Rights?’ he asked, questioning the judges’ impartiality.
Amnesty International and Human Rights Watch, along with five other organizations, called for Finjanji’s release pending her trial.
