Russia ‘very concerned’ about Ukrainian missile shot down in Belarus

“It is an incident that causes extreme concern, not only for us, but also for our Belarusian partners,” Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said.

Russia announced today that worries too much on a Ukrainian anti-aircraft missile that was shot down after it entered the airspace of its neighbor and ally yesterday, Thursday Belarus.

Belarus’ Defense Ministry announced yesterday that its air defenses shot down a Ukrainian S-300 surface-to-air missile near the village of Harbatsa in Brest Oblast, about 15 kilometers from the Belarus-Ukraine border.

The incident occurred yesterday during one of Russia’s biggest missile attacks against Ukraine since the war began.

“It is an incident that causes extreme concern, not only for us, but also for our Belarusian partners,” said the spokesman Kremlin Dmitry Peskov today to reporters in Moscow’s first public comment on this incident, which occurred around 10:00 am local time (09:00 Greek time) on Thursday.

The S-300 is a Soviet air defense system used by both Russia and Ukraine. In November, an S-300 believed to have veered off course after being fired by Ukrainian air defenses — also during Russian airstrikes — crashed into NATO-member Poland, sparking fears of escalation, which were quickly defused.

Belarus allowed Moscow to use its territory in February as a base for Russian troops and equipment as it launched what Russia calls its “special military operation” in Ukraine.

Russian and Belarusian military activity in Belarus has also increased in recent months.

Peskov today underlined the close military ties that exist between the two countries, noting that Russia is in “constant dialogue and constant coordination” with Belarus.

Minsk insists, however, that it is not involved in the conflict in Ukraine and will not do so unless its security is threatened by Ukraine or its Western allies.
