Over 30cm of snow expected to fall on Northern Plains and the US Midwest within the next 24 hours, according to forecasters, while the same barometric system threatens many areas of the South with tornadoes and severe thunderstorms.

After dropping about 12 inches of snow in Nebraska and South Dakota, the powerful snowstorm is moving east and could drop another 12-18 inches in southern South Dakota and Minnesota, according to the National Weather Service (NWS).
