The program responds to what the country’s government has been asking for for a long time

The government of Mexico yesterday praised the measures announced by US President Joe Biden, who announced that up to 30,000 people, citizens of Cuba, Haiti, Nicaragua and Venezuela, would be allowed to legally immigrate to the country in a monthly base.

The Mexican government noted “with satisfaction” the announcement of “new actions by the US aimed at increasing worker mobility,” Roberto Velasco, an official at Mexico’s Foreign Ministry, said via Twitter.

He added that this program responds to what the government of his country has been asking for a long time in order to “achieve coordinated, safe, legal and humane migration in the region”.

For Mr. Velasco, Washington’s measures will allow to reduce the risks for immigrants who try to reach the American soil illegally.

The new quota provides for 30,000 legal work permits for people who have a sponsor in the US.

Those who enter the US illegally will continue to be at risk of deportation.

It is a “safe, humane, functional” solution, said the Democratic president of the USA, who is expected in Mexico the day after tomorrow, Sunday, after his visit to the border city of El Paso (Texas).

A similar program was announced in October for 24,000 sponsored Venezuelans, allowing them to travel by air after a formal application.

According to Mr. Velasco, this program has led to a 94% reduction in illegal migration flows, while allowing migrants to avoid resorting to traffickers.

Immigration will be a key issue in the upcoming meeting between Joe Biden and his Mexican counterpart Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador.

In November, US authorities arrested more than 200,000 illegal immigrants at its southern border.
