The number of children in the UK who have died from a serious infection with the strep A bacteria continues to rise.

Since September, 37 children have died, according to the latest figures compiled by the UK Health Protection Agency.

During the previous outbreak of infections from the bacteria, in the winter of 2017-18, 27 children had died.

29 of the deaths have been recorded in England, five in Wales, two in Scotland and one in Northern Ireland.

In England, 122 adults have also died from severe infection.

Cases of scarlet fever, the most common and relatively mild form of strep A, are already at 35,616 since September. In the winter of 2017-18 there were a total of 4,192 cases.

Scabies is treated with the timely administration of an antibiotic, but in a few cases it can develop into a more serious and dangerous infection.
