Tanks are not the ‘miracle solution’ for Ukraine, says US General Christopher Cavoli

A balance between all systems is required,” the American general said on the eve of the crucial meeting of the so-called “contact group” on the delivery of arms and ammunition to Kyiv.

Western tanks are not “the panacea” for Ukraine in the war against Russia, the Supreme Allied Commander Europe (SACEUR) argued today, ahead of a crucial meeting of the so-called “contact group” on arms delivery and ammunition in Kyiv.

“There is no specific weapon system that is a miracle solution. A balance is required between all systems,” said US General Christopher Cavoli, after the summit of the heads of NATO military forces in Brussels. “But it is clear that modern Western technology is more effective than Russian” on the battlefield, he pointed out.

The US-led Ukraine contact group will meet tomorrow at the US military base in Ramstein, Germany, to coordinate the aid mission to Kyiv. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky expects from the West more modern, heavy weapons and mainly tanks and anti-aircraft systems.

“Since the Russians are fighting with tanks, the Ukrainians need them too,” Dutch Admiral Rob Bauer said after today’s meeting. He added that it is important for the Ukrainians to have tanks to face the Russians but also to regain their territories. Bauer considers it “likely” that Russia is planning a new attack in the spring because it has not changed its goals in Ukraine. “Ukrainians must prepare for this,” he said.

NATO allies want to understand what the Ukrainians will need most in order to provide their support, he added.

The Ukrainian Defense Minister will participate in tomorrow’s Ramstein summit and outline the needs of the Ukrainian armed forces.
