Lula government endorses Venezuelan ambassador appointed by Nicolás Maduro

The government of Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva (PT) gave the approval for the new Venezuelan ambassador to Brazil to be Manuel Vicente Vadell Aquino, appointed by the dictatorship of Nicolás Maduro.

In a note, the Itamaraty confirmed that it had granted the agrément —diplomatic document that indicates the host government’s agreement with the nomination— to Vadell, on the occasion of a meeting held this Monday (23) between foreign ministers Mauro Vieira and Yvan Gil, in Buenos Aires. .

The Minister of Foreign Affairs is part of Lula’s entourage in Argentina, on the PT’s first international trip since taking office. In a meeting, the president and his counterpart Alberto Fernández made a series of nods to the Venezuelan regime.

Initially, the Brazilian’s advisor had said that he would have a bilateral meeting with Maduro in Buenos Aires. But the meeting, which would be the first between the leaders since the countries resumed diplomatic ties, was canceled by decision of Caracas.

In a note released hours later, the regime confirmed that the dictator should also not participate in the CELAC (Community of Latin American and Caribbean States) summit in the Argentine capital, attributing the suspension of the agenda to an alleged move by the Argentine opposition.

“In the last few hours we have been informed that there is an elaborate plan within the neo-fascist right whose objective is to carry out a series of aggressions against our delegation in order to put on a deplorable show, with the purpose of disturbing the positive effects of such an important regional meeting and, in this way, contribute to an already failed campaign of discredit undertaken by the US empire”, says the text.

Diplomatic ties between Brazil and Venezuela were broken in 2020 by former President Jair Bolsonaro (PL), who recognized the opposition Juan Guaidó as the legitimate interim leader. Earlier, still under the Michel Temer (MDB) administration, ambassadors from both countries were withdrawn from their respective missions, but the mutual diplomatic presence was maintained at lower levels of representation.

Under Lula, who took office on January 1, the Brazilian government has begun reopening the Brazilian embassy in Caracas. Diplomat Flávio Macieira has the task of listing the measures to be taken to resume the functioning of the buildings of the diplomatic representation in the Venezuelan country.

He works in Venezuela as a chargé d’affaires – a hierarchical level lower than that of an ambassador. Brazil has three buildings in Caracas (the embassy, a consulate and the ambassador’s residence), all of which were closed by former minister Ernesto Araújo during the Bolsonaro government.

The reopening of the representation in Maduro’s country was a request from Lula to Minister Mauro Vieira.
