Traffic at Paris Gare de l’Est train station will be disrupted throughout the day

Traffic at Paris’s Gare de l’Est train station, which serves mainly Germany, will be disrupted “throughout the day” after an “intentional fire to electrical cables”, he told the AFP SNCF, which had initially spoken of reopening the station at 10:00 (11:00 Greek time).

“Traffic will be interrupted throughout the day, until the end of the service. About ten employees of the SNCF Network are on the job in order to repair the damage as quickly as possible,” explained a representative of the company.

“The SNCF Network teams are continuing their efforts to determine the cause. We ask you to postpone your journey,” SNCF wrote on its traffic information website (info trafic).

SNCF had earlier this morning said a “malicious act” on a central switch and “deliberate arson on electrical cables” had caused a complete stoppage early this morning of departures and arrivals of TGVs and TERs, as well as the line P of Transilien, the Paris area network.

“Around 03:00 in the morning, a cage containing electrical cables of SNCF traffic signs was opened and someone set it on fire. An SNCF employee called the police at around 04:30,” a police source told AFP.

“A malicious act caused this damage. I regret the impact on many people taking the train this morning,” French Transport Minister Clement Bonn told FranceInfo.

“Unfortunately, we regularly have malicious actions on the cables, on the rails to get some material that is of little value, so these actions must be severely punished because we see the impact they have on everyday life,” he added.

Line P’s Twitter page speaks of “vandalism, fire in engine room electrical cables in Sector Ver”, in the Paris region, and posts a photo of charred wires.

On the station’s departure boards — displayed in real time on its website — next to the TGV and TER itineraries are marked “delayed” or “cancelled”. For those passengers scheduled to depart after 10.00, some routes currently remain in green with an “on time” note, while others have already been announced as “cancelled”.

According to SNCF figures dating back to 2019, around 41 million passengers pass through Gare de l’Est, one of Paris’ six major train stations, annually. It serves eastern France as well as international destinations such as Germany and Luxembourg.
