Russia’s telecommunications authority Roskomnadzor announced today that it has blocked the websites of the CIA and the FBI, accusing the two US government agencies of spreading false information, Russian news agency TASS reported.

“Roskomnadzor blocked access to a number of sources belonging to state structures of enemy countries because they disseminate material aimed at destabilizing the social and political situation in Russia,” Roskomnadzor said in a statement carried by Russian news agencies.

There was no immediate comment from Washington or the US embassy in Moscow.

Russia has made it a criminal offense to defame its armed forces, punishable by up to five years in prison, while deliberately spreading “false information” about the Russian military carries a maximum sentence of up to 15 years.

Since Russia sent tens of thousands of troops into Ukraine last February, Roskomnadzor has blocked most independent media, some foreign websites and social media platforms including Facebook, Instagram and Twitter.
