The announcement, which was shortly followed by a US commitment to send M1 Abrams tanks to Kyiv, angered the Kremlin.
“At the moment, there is no agreement for talks (with Soltz) in the program. Putin was and remains open to contacts,” the Kremlin spokesman said Dmitry Peskov as reported by the RIA Novosti agency.
In an interview with Berlin newspaper Tagesspiegel published today, Scholz said: “I will talk to Putin again because it is necessary to talk,” and added: “It is Putin’s responsibility to withdraw his troops from Ukraine to end this horrible , pointless war that has already cost hundreds of thousands of lives.”
Representatives for Soltz were not immediately available for comment. He is currently on tour in Latin America.
The last time Putin and Soltz spoke by phone was in early December.
The Russian leader had said at the time that Germany’s and the West’s line on Ukraine was “disastrous” and called on Berlin to reconsider its approach.
Germany is the second largest donor of military equipment to Ukraine after the US, according to the Kiel Institute for the World Economy, and bigger than other European powers such as France and Britain.
