US Vice President Kamala Harris is expected to attend the funeral, as is Philonis Floyd, George Floyd’s sister.
Three weeks after 29-year-old Tyre Nichols died after being brutally beaten by Memphis police officers, his family is preparing for his funeral today.
Nichols’ funeral will be held at Mississippi Avenue Christian Church at 10:30 a.m. (local time). Among others, the present is expected to be given by the Vice President of the USA Kamala Harris, as well as Philonis Floyd Floyd, the sister of George Floyd.
“On February 1, the vice president will travel to Memphis, Tennessee, to attend the funeral of Tyree Nichols,” the White House said in a statement today.
The Reverend Alfred Charles Sharpton, founder and chairman of the National Action Network, said Nichols’ family intended to have a “dignified funeral, not a marathon”.
“This is not about politics, this is about justice,” Sharpton said. “People come from all over the world, and we come because we’re all Tyre, now.”
The video from the moment of the beating of the 29-year-old shows the brutality of the five black former police officers, after a control, which in theory would have been routine, in the big city of Tennessee on January 7. Nichols died three days later in hospital.
29-year-old Tyr Nichols loved skateboarding and was an amateur photographer. He was the youngest child in the family and he also had a son who was only 4 years old.
