Ankara sees enemies everywhere: “Psychological warfare” by the US and Western countries, the closing of consulates

Suleyman Soylu said the countries deliberately chose Friday, the very day Turkey set a target of attracting 60 million tourists a year.

The Turkish Minister of the Interior Suleiman Soylu accused the US and some European countries of waging “psychological warfare” on Turkey today by closing their diplomatic missions in the country over fears of a terrorist threat.

Soylu said the countries deliberately chose Friday, the very day Turkey has set a target of attracting 60 million tourists a year.

The warnings from USA, Germany, Sweden, Britain and Switzerland of an increased risk of an attack on Turkey came after tensions between Ankara and some European countries erupted over protests that Ankara considers Islamophobic or anti-Turkish.

In the most recent episode, far-right Danish Swedish politician Rasmus Paludan burned a copy of the Koran in Stockholm, threatening to do so every week until Turkey approves Sweden’s NATO membership. Following this incident, Ankara suspended talks with Stockholm and Helsinki regarding their requests to join the Alliance, which it has yet to approve.

Berlin has also warned German citizens of a particularly high risk of attack in Turkey, and the German consulate in Istanbul will remain closed on Friday.

Germany’s foreign ministry cited “precise and specific” information about a threat, specifically citing the Beyoglu district of Istanbulthe Istiklal shopping street and Taksim Square, as well as the Levent district, which is home to several consulates.

He did not name any organization behind the threat.
