At least 320 killed in Syria earthquake – Erdogan admits he can’t predict how much the death toll will rise

Erdogan acknowledged that he could not predict how much more the death toll would rise as search and rescue operations continued. So far 45 countries have offered aid to Turkey, he noted.
Besides, as reported by the Syrian state news agency, at least they have been killed in Syria 320 people due to the earthquake and the injured are 1,000.
WHO is concerned about some areas of Turkey
The World Health Organization (WHO) earlier said it was concerned about areas of Turkey that have not been heard from after the deadly earthquake that struck the country overnight.

The head of the Red Crescent said resources were being mobilized to help those affected, speaking of widespread damage and calling on those in damaged buildings to evacuate immediately if they could.

For his part, US President Joe Biden has directed USAID and other federal government agencies to assess their response options for providing aid to the areas most affected by the earthquake in Turkey and Syria, the National Security Adviser to USA Jake Sullivan in a statement released yesterday, Sunday.

Turkish seismologist: The biggest earthquake of the last 24 years
Speaking to the BBC, seismologist Dr Haluk Özener, who is director of the Kandilli Observatory and Earthquake Research Institute, said the deadly earthquake in Gaziantep was the region’s biggest in 24 years.
“We are dealing with the biggest earthquake we have seen in the last 24 years in this region. There have been 100 aftershocks so far. About 53 of them are over 4 [στην κλίμακα Ρίχτερ]. Seven of those that occurred are above 5. We can say that these earthquakes will continue in the coming days,” he said.
