According to the New York Daily News, which cited an eyewitness, the young man was shot by two people who then fled.

According to the same source, the shooting caused panic in the very touristic area and “a stampede of people who ran to leave”.

The New York Police Department (NYPD) announced that the 22-year-old was shot and found with a bullet wound to the chest at the intersection of 8th Avenue and 44th Street in Manhattan, in front of a restaurant.

After being taken to a hospital, he “succumbed to his injuries,” a police spokesman said by email. “No arrests have been made” so far and “the investigation is ongoing.”
