Former South Carolina governor and former US ambassador to the UN, Nikki Haley, today officially announced her candidacy for the 2024 Republican presidential nomination against Donald Trump.

“Get excited! Time for a new generation! Here we go,” Haley said in her first campaign video posted on Twitter.

If she wins the nomination, she will become the first woman in Republican history to run for President of the United States, as well as the party’s first non-white nominee.

South Carolina is historically the third state in a row in the general election to nominate the Republican presidential nominee and often plays a large role in the race. Haley, as head of state from 2011 to 2017, is popular there, according to polls.

While she enters the race as an underdog — most national polls show her support in the single digits — Haley has developed a reputation in political circles for coming out on top in hard-to-win battles.

She has distanced herself from Trump several times, only to later tone down her rhetoric toward the former president, saying he has an important role to play in the Republican Party. While criticizing Republicans for unfoundedly challenging the outcome of the 2020 presidential election, he campaigned in the 2022 midterm elections in favor of several candidates who supported Trump’s false claims of voter fraud.
