At the same time, Swedish Prime Minister Ulf Kristerson welcomed Turkey’s foreign minister’s statement that talks between Ankara and Stockholm on his country’s NATO membership could resume “soon.”
THE Russia recommends clear military threat for neighboring areas of Swedenbut its forces are largely occupied with the war in Ukraine, the head of Sweden’s Military Security and Intelligence Service (MUST) said today at a press conference she gave.
“The European Security Order as we know it has ceased to exist… and with it the risks to Sweden’s security have increased” said Lena Hallin.
According to Hallin, Russia is expected to build up its military capabilities in the region adjacent to Sweden when it becomes possible, in response to the country’s request, along with Finland, to join NATO.
MUST, however, believes that Russia wants to avoid escalating current tensions and turning them into an armed conflict with NATO.
“But there is much uncertainty, mainly related to whether the Russian leadership is willing to take a high risk“, he continued, adding that tension also increases the risk that an accident or misjudgment could lead to a collision.
At the same time, Swedish Prime Minister Ulf Kristerson welcomed the statement by Turkey’s foreign minister that the talks between Ankara and Stockholm on his country’s accession to the NATO they could start again “soon”.
“I certainly welcome Turkey’s announcement that they want to restart discussions around the tripartite agreements” that Turkey signed with Sweden and Finland last summer, Christerson told reporters.
