An average of four children are killed or injured every day in the war in Ukraine, a report by a non-governmental organization points out, underlining that in reality the toll is probably even higher.

The war, which will mark one year on Friday, is a disaster for children, said Inger Asing, the executive director of Save the children, presenting her organization’s report.

According to the NGO text, children have become victims of some of the most horrific crimes during the war, including torture, sexual violence and murder. Many of the crimes are not recorded.

Each child in Ukraine has spent an average of 920 hours—or more than a month—in underground shelters since the war began, according to data from Save the Children. The situation is worse near the fronts.

Being trapped underground is a horrific experience that children will never forget, Ms Asing pointed out. Many of the children in Ukraine live in a constant state of terror, he added.

In addition, they suffer from the fear of losing their relatives or being forced to leave the place where they live, added the Swedish activist.

Save the Children appealed for the military not to target civilians and civilian buildings, especially schools, homes and hospitals. Those who violate human rights and international humanitarian law must be held accountable, he insisted.

The NGO considers it important to offer psychological support to the children and to have the possibility to return to school. In many areas, the delivery of lessons is only possible thanks to digital platforms, but barely one in three children have the necessary devices.

Since the outbreak of the war on February 24, 2022, more than 18,600 civilians have been killed or injured, Save the children recalled, citing verified United Nations figures. The civilian casualty toll is believed to be much higher in reality.
