THE Vladimir Putin officially signed into law which suspends Russia’s participation on the “New Start” nuclear treatythe last major remaining nuclear arms control treaty with the US, state media reported.

The text of the explanatory statement of the law is as follows: “The Russian Federation suspends the Treaty between the Russian Federation and the United States of America on Measures for the Further Reduction and Limitation of Strategic Offensive Arms, signed in Prague on April 8, 2010”

Russian state news agency Tass reported that the document was published today and the law entered into force from the moment of its official publication.

Putin announced the suspension of Russia’s participation in the New Strategic Arms Reduction Treaty, known as “New Start,” earlier this month.

“They want to inflict a strategic defeat on us and claim our nuclear facilities,” Putin said in a speech ahead of the upcoming one-year anniversary of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.

“In this regard, I am forced to state that Russia is suspending its participation in the Strategic Offensive Weapons Treaty” he emphasized.
