New severe weather phenomena are predicted for his state Mississippi in the US after the tornadoes which killed 26 people, warned the governor as reported by the BBC.

Gov. Tate Reeves warned that significant risks remain in parts of the state. Hundreds of people have been evacuated after tornadoes hit Mississippi and Alabama Friday night. The mayor of one of the worst-hit towns said he had lost personal friends in the disaster.

Friday’s tornado was the deadliest in the state of Mississippi in more than a decade. At least 25 people have died in the state, with one person confirmed dead in neighboring Alabama.

Trees have been uprooted, homes damaged and power lines downed by the tornado, which was described as “violent” and given the second highest intensity rating possible.

The American president Joe Biden declared Mississippi in a state of emergency, and has announced the release of federal aid to affected areas to set up temporary shelters, repair damage and provide low-interest loans to cover uninsured assets.

Makeshift aid stations have been set up outside some buildings, distributing water and food to residents.
