Angela Merkel served as chancellor of Germany from 2005 to 2021. According to Stern, the award ceremony will be attended by members of Merkel’s family, as well as former associates. Among others, Christian Democrat former ministers Thomas de Maiziere and Peter Altmaier have been invited, as well as Franz Midtfering, Merkel’s first vice chancellor from the Social Democratic Party (SPD).

No one from the current leadership of the CDU, the sister Christian Social Union of Bavaria (CSU) or the Liberal Party (FDP) is on the list of invitees, underlines the German magazine Stern.

The award ceremony is also expected to be attended by former soccer player and national coach Jurgen Klinsmann, and actor Ulrich Mattes.
