Four of the 12 people missing after yesterday’s boat overturned in a lake on the border of Zambia and the Democratic Republic of Congo were found dead today, bringing the death toll to six so far. The police clarified that the bodies of two adults and two children were recovered.

The accident occurred in the early hours of Tuesday when a boat, carrying a total of 32 people, capsized in Lake Mueru, shortly after leaving Zambia’s Kilua Island bound for Kasobue in the Democratic Republic of Congo.

Zambian authorities attribute the overturning of the boat to large waves that formed in the lake due to strong winds blowing in the area.

Two passengers were found dead a short time later, while 18 people managed to swim safely to shore, said Danny Muale, a police spokesman.

It was the third maritime accident in a few weeks in Zambia. On March 31, fourteen people died after a boat capsized on Lake Banguelu. Another eight people died on April 2 when the boat they were on capsized in a river on the outskirts of the capital Lusaka.
