THE president of Lithuania Gitanas Nausenda called for a stronger NATO presence on the alliance’s eastern flank as Russia’s war in Ukraine continues.

“This is a front line that needs to be very strong. We need air and missile defense and a greater presence of allied forces in the region,” Nauceda said today after meeting in Vilnius with President of Germany Frank-Walter Steinmeier.

“Germany’s long-term commitment to Lithuania’s security is essential for the entire eastern flank of NATO,” he stressed. “For its part, Lithuania is ready to do everything it can to make the German troops feel at home when they are in our country.”

Steinmeier spoke of Lithuania’s centuries-long fight for freedom and promised the country German aid in the event of a Russian attack.

Lithuanians have “an unquenchable desire for freedom and have resisted foreign rule and subjugation,” Steinmeier said.

“We stand side by side. Their safety is also our safety”, he stressed.

“Together we will defend every square centimeter of NATO allied territory,” Steinmeier added. “Our allies can count on it, Lithuania can count on it.”
