In an effort to limit distractions during lessons
Cell phones, tablets and smart watches will be largely banned inside school halls in Netherlands from January 1, 2024the government announced today, in an effort to limit distractions during classes.
The use of devices will only be permitted in specific circumstances, for example during digital skills courses, for medical reasons or for people with disabilities.
“Although cell phones are woven into our lives, they do not belong in the classroom,” Education Minister Robert Dyckgraaf said in a statement.
“Students should be able to concentrate and be given the opportunity to study properly. Cell phones are a nuisance, according to scientific research. We need to protect students from this.”
The ban is the result of an agreement between the ministry, the schools and the competent organizations.
Schools can find their own way to enforce the ban, Dyckgraaf said, but they will pursue legal action if that doesn’t produce sufficient results by the summer of 2024.
