The Ocean Viking, the ambulance ship chartered by SOS Méditerranée, has rescued more than 500 people in danger in 11 operations in the past 42 hours southwest of the island of Lampedusa, the Marseille-based humanitarian non-governmental organization said.

Red Cross and Red Crescent teams on board the ship, in collaboration with SOS Méditerranée workers, rescued more than 500 people and “rescue operations are continuing” in the sea area between Tunisia and Lampedusa, the organization said.

On Thursday, the Ocean Viking received instructions from the Italian rescue operations coordination center to help migrants in danger southwest of Lampedusa, the statement said.

The central Mediterranean is the most dangerous migration route in the world, according to the International Organization for Migration.

Since the beginning of 2023 at least 1,848 people have drowned or are missing trying to reach Europe.
