China has become the first country to appoint a new ambassador to Afghanistan since the Taliban regained power in 2021, the BBC reports.

The Taliban were quick to take advantage of this development, stating that the appointment of Zhao Xing signals the establishment of diplomatic ties with other countries as well.

It is noted that no other country has recognized the Taliban government, which has been criticized for its human rights violations and violation of women’s rights.

According to analysts, Mr. Zhao’s appointment is part of China’s moves to strengthen its influence in the region.

Afghanistan is at the center of a region that is key to the development of Beijing’s “Belt and Road” initiative. Beijing has previously said it wants to invest in Afghanistan’s natural resources, estimated at $1 trillion. These include extensive deposits of copper, lithium and gold.
