The United States, with the support of Britain and France, has asked the UN Security Council to hold a closed-door meeting on Thursday to launch a medium-range ballistic missile from North Korea, according to diplomatic sources.
North Korea confirmed Monday that it had launched a Hwasong-12 ballistic missile that had previously threatened Guam, raising fears that Pyongyang could resume large-scale missile tests.
It was North Korea’s seventh missile test last month and the first missile capable of carrying a nuclear warhead since 2017.
UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres on Tuesday condemned the shooting and called on Pyongyang to refrain from further “counterproductive actions”, a spokesman said.
This is a violation of the 2018 announcement of a moratorium on such launches by North Korea and a clear violation of a Security Council resolution, said UN spokesman Farhan Huck. He added that it was a matter of great concern that North Korea had once again disregarded the safety of international flights and navigation.
Since 2006, the UN has imposed sanctions on North Korea, which the Security Council has gradually tightened in an effort to prevent funding for Pyongyang’s nuclear program.
