As a “serious ongoing violation of the dead zone”, the Government Spokesman, Konstantinos Letympiotis, described the latest action of the Turkish occupying forces, regarding the placement of a metal web, on which a rotating camera and antenna.
Asked by the Cyprus News Agency about information about an incident in the dead zone, Mr. Letympiotis said that it is confirmed that on Monday afternoon, a number of soldiers of the Turkish occupying forces entered the dead zone, in the area of ​​Agios Dometios, while a small group of them installed in an uninhabited house, known as “Maria’s House”, a metal mast, on which a rotating camera and antenna was mounted.
He noted that in the previous days the occupying forces had also electrified the house in support of the above installation.
After the installation was completed, Turkish soldiers withdrew from the dead zone, it said.
“The incident is being treated as a serious ongoing violation of the dead zone,” said Mr. Letymiotis, adding that the Government is in constant contact with the peacekeeping force to restore the situation to where it was before the above events.
A violation of the status quo in the dead zone near Agios Dometios was attempted by Turkish forces, sources told KYPE on Monday, noting that the peacekeeping force, UNFICYP, is handling the matter.
UNFICYP Spokesperson Aleem Siddiq when asked about the incident and the situation as it is developing, told KYPE that the situation is currently calm and UN peacekeepers are monitoring the situation following reports from security personnel near the neutral zone. “We are working with the Turkish Cypriot side to prevent tensions and ensure the maintenance of the status quo,” he added.
