Reports say Netanyahu has not responded to requests from government officials about planning for the next day in Gaza.
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu is reportedly refusing any discussion of planning for a post-war Gaza administration, despite requests from Israeli security officials to make the talks the focus of the next day’s talks.
According to a report cited by the Guardian, in recent days, three requests to the prime minister’s office were forwarded by the heads of the Mossad, the Shin Bet, the chief of staff of the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) and the defense ministry to arrange a meeting on with decisions concerning “The next day”. Israel says it has achieved its targets against the Palestinian militant group that controls the Gaza Strip, Israel’s Channel 12 reported on Tuesday night.
All those requests were denied, the network reports. “Time is running out and decisions must already be made on how to act in relation to all relevant factors inside and outside the Gaza Strip. The Americans want an explanation,” an unnamed security official said.
Tuesday’s report comes amid claims in Israeli media that Netanyahu and Defense Minister Yoav Gallad have also refused to discuss transitioning from the current stage “high-intensity” fighting in a new phase that will focus on more precisely targeting Hamas leaders. Also, another report wants Netanyahu to have not allowed Galand to hold detailed discussions about a potential hostage release deal with the Mossad.
Netanyahu may wish to delay such discussions to protect his position as prime minister: his war-torn government will dissolve after the end of the conflict, and any solution to Gaza that includes Palestinian actors, such as the return of the West Bank Palestinian Authority , threatens the stability of his far-right coalition government, the Guardian reports.
A spokesman for the prime minister’s office said the date for a cabinet discussion on the matter “in the next day” had been set a month ago and would take place in the coming days.
