In front of her father’s eyes, 15-year-old surfer Khai Cowley died when she was attacked by a shark in South Australia, specifically at Ethel Beach.

Just two weeks ago the minor had distinguished herself in sport as he was ranked 146th under 18 in Australia.

Emergency services desperately tried to save Khai Cowley, however they did not succeed.

Initially the police statement spoke of a teenage boy who died after the fatal shark attack, however, according to the latest update, it is 15-year-old surfer Khai Cowley.

A resident of the area reported that this is the first fatal attack at this particular resort although there have been several attacks recently in South Australian waters.

In a statement, South Australian police said officers were first alerted to the attack on Thursday at 1:30 p.m. local time (02:30 GMT).

15 years old

“Unfortunately, the body of a teenager was recovered from the water,” the police said in a statement.

Ethel Beach is a 400m long sandy beach, popular with surfers and tourists, with waves averaging 1.5m.

According to an eyewitness and resident of the area, the victim may have been about “30 to 40 meters away from the shore”, while he added that “the area has always had sharks but it seems there are a lot more now.”
