Two Ukrainian drones struck today Saturday major processing plant at the Volgograd oil refinery; in southern Russia, in an operation carried out by the SBU security service, a Ukrainian source told Reuters.

Local authorities said earlier that a fire that broke out at the large refinery after a drone attack had been extinguished. The refinery belongs to the oil producing company Lukoil.

The strike is the latest in a series of drone attacks targeting Russian oil facilities, infrastructure that Kiev considers vital to the Kremlin’s war effort.

The source in Kiev told Reuters that such drone attacks will continue.

“By striking oil refineries that work for the Russian military-industrial complex, we are not only cutting off the management support of the supply of fuel for enemy equipment, but we are also reducing the Russian budget support,” the source said.

The distance from the northeastern Ukrainian city of Kharkiv near the border with Russia to the southern Russian city of Volgograd is greater than 600 km.

Russia has been regularly carrying out long-range missile strikes on targets in Ukraine since launching its full-scale invasion, leaving Kiev scrambling for a quick way to close the gap with Moscow’s more advanced military technology.

It seeks to push innovation in drone technology and support the production of long-range drones for Ukraine to strike back.
