Biden will meet with Republican and Democratic leaders in the House and Senate tomorrow to discuss the “urgent” issue of passing a government funding bill by midnight Friday
US President Joe Biden will meet with its leaders Congress tomorrow, Tuesday to discuss the issue of funding the federal state apparatus, as the deadline to prevent the shutdown, the suspension of the operation of part of the public services, expires on Friday, his services announced at the White House yesterday Sunday.
Mr. Biden he will meet with Republican and Democratic leaders in the House of Representatives and in the Senate tomorrow to discuss the “urgent” issue of approving a draft law on the financing of the state until midnight on Friday (local time; 07:00 Saturday Greek time). He will also touch on the issue of draft legislation to offer US support to Ukraine, Israel and Taiwan, as the deadlock remains.
Members of Congress they continue to argue over how to prevent the shutdown. Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer indicated yesterday that no deal had yet been struck and called on House Republican Speaker Mike Johnson to “step up” to strike a compromise despite opposition from the more conservative wing of his faction.
Later yesterday, Mr. Johnson assured via X (the former Twitter) that Republicans were continuing to negotiate in good faith and argued that many of the outstanding issues were demands made by Democrats after the fact. He added that he hoped there would be a result “as soon as possible”.
Current funding runs out March 1 for some federal agencies, including the Department of Transportation. For others, such as the Ministry of Defence, the deadline is March 8.
The US government came dangerously close to a shutdown in the fall when hard-line Republicans fired former House Speaker Kevin McCarthy over his temporary government funding deal with Mr Schumer.
