From… February summer. Millions of Americans across much of the Midwest, the US East Coast and the US South will enjoy a second day of inclement weather on Tuesday that refer more to June and July than February, before a severe cold front brings back winter.

Summer-like temperatures are expected in some areas. In Texas, the mercury is forecast to hit 27C, after soaring to nearly 34C in Dallas and other cities yesterday, according to the US Weather Service.

In Killeen, Texas, about 150 miles south of Dallas, the top temperature expected at 32 degrees Celsiusafter thermometers in the city of 150,000 showed a record high of 38 degrees Celsius yesterday.

“This is Texas, we adapt to the heat,” said an employee at the Black Rifle Coffee shop in Killeen. “We have big doors that we open wide to let in air, and customers mostly ordered iced drinks.”

Forecasters say it’s hard to pin down the dramatic weather pattern with human-induced climate change, however such extreme phenomena are increasingly common because of global warming, as they point out. Scientists explain that the seasonal El Niño weather pattern is also contributing to the unusual weather. In Cleveland and Philadelphia, the highest temperature, which normally hovers around 4C, is expected to reach 15C today. In Chicago, the high temperature is forecast to reach 25 degrees Celsius, a record for any February day on record.

Forecasters are telling people to enjoy the mild weather while they can as they forecast the return of winter to the central and eastern US tomorrow, with the mercury nearing minus 18 degrees Celsius, but also heavy snowfall and gale-force winds in many areas, including in Chicago.

“After summer-like temperatures of around 21 degrees Celsius, tomorrow morning’s chilly weather near or below 0 degrees Celsius he will be absolutely cruel!”the Chicago Weather Service noted in a post on X.

Parts of the Dakotas and Idaho got a taste of what’s to come today with the mercury dipping below -17C and snow piles expected to reach 18cm during the day.

In Mackay, Idaho, a town of 600 people, the mercury dropped to -13 degrees Celsius today.

“There’s nowhere to hide from the cold,” said Edith Wheeler See, a manager at the Mackay Lumber and Hardware store.
