US President Joe Biden said on Friday that a truce between Israel and Hamas before the start of Ramadan on Sunday looks unlikely.

“It looks difficult,” Biden told a reporter who asked him if a truce deal in the Gaza Strip was likely before the start of the Muslim holy month of Ramadan.

The US president has made no secret of his concern about an escalation of violence in East Jerusalem if Israeli military operations continue during Ramadan.

Hamas on Friday called on Palestinians to “mobilize” and “flock” during Ramadan to Jerusalem’s Al-Aqsa mosque, where there are fears of tensions during the period, following five months of war in Gaza between Israel and Palestinian Islamist movement.

At the same time, Hamas declared that it will not make “any compromise” in its demands for a definitive ceasefire and the withdrawal of Israeli forces from the Gaza Strip, in order to agree to the release of the hostages it is holding after the October 7 attack.
