The Parliament of Slovenia approved today by a majority the recognition of the State of Palestine, validating the government’s decision a few days ago.
The conservative opposition’s request for a consultative referendum was rejected and, following a vote, the government’s decision to recognize Palestine as an “independent and sovereign state” days ago was upheld.
As a result, Slovenia became the 147th UN member state to recognize the State of Palestine.
On May 28, Spain, Ireland and Norway recognized the Palestinian state, prompting an angry reaction from Israel.
Of the 27 member states of the European Union, Sweden, Cyprus, Hungary, the Czech Republic, Poland, Slovakia, Romania and Bulgaria have already recognized a Palestinian state. Malta has indicated it could do the same soon.
Britain and Australia have said they are also considering recognition, but France has made clear the time is not yet ripe. Germany agrees with the US, Israel’s staunchest ally, rejecting a unilateral approach and insisting that a two-state solution can only be achieved through dialogue.
Last Tuesday, the Danish parliament voted against a bill to recognize a Palestinian state.
