The US armed forces they announced in the early hours of the morning that yesterday Friday “destroyed” radars on Yemeni soil that allowed the Houthis to target ships, while the rebels have increased their attacks on shipping in the Red Sea and Gulf of Aden.

The US Joint Chiefs of Staff responsible for the Middle East (CENTCOM“central command”) reported via X that “seven radars” were destroyed which allowed the Houthis to target “ships and endanger commercial shipping”.

He said radars were destroyed over the past 24 hours in Houthi-controlled areas of Yemen, adding that two unmanned surface vessels (USVs) and a remote-controlled unmanned aerial system (UAS) of the rebels were also destroyed, respectively, in and over the Red Sea.

The US airstrikes come against a backdrop of further escalation in attacks by the Houthis, a movement that is part of the “axis of resistance”, a loose alliance of Iran-backed armed groups hostile to Israel and the US.

The crew of the Tutor, a Greek-owned cargo ship that was damaged on Wednesday in a Houthi attack in the Red Sea, was “urgently removed” from the vessel in the intervention of “military authorities”, the British Maritime Safety Agency also reported yesterday UKMTO.

The Houthis said on Thursday they had launched attacks against three ships in 24 hours “in retaliation for the crimes against our people in the Gaza Strip and in retaliation for the US-British attack on our country”.

Since November, the rebels have launched dozens of drone and missile attacks against ships in the Red Sea and Gulf of Aden, causing a huge problem for maritime trade in this strategically important zone.

In response to these attacks, the US – Israel’s main international ally – formed in December an international force to protect navigation in this maritime area. Another naval force, named Shields, was also developed this year by the EU.

And, since January, the US armed forces, acting in several cases in cooperation with those of Britain, have launched strikes against Houthi weapons systems, positions and facilities in Yemen.
