The former British Foreign Secretary James Cleverly said on Tuesday that he would run for the leadership of the Conservative Party, which lost power to Keir Starmer’s Labor Party in an election earlier this month after 14 years in government.

The party announced on Monday that it will nominate a new leader on November 2, after its worst election performance led to the resignation of former prime minister Rishi Sunak.

Cleverley, a former Conservative Party chairman who was most recently Home Secretary, is the first person to officially confirm he will run for the Conservative leadership.

“The last election showed us that we had lost the trust of voters. They questioned our motivation, our ability and our commitment to motivate them. This has to change,” Cleverley wrote in an article for the Telegraph newspaper.

“That starts with choosing the right leader and then supporting whoever that is. I’m putting myself forward to be that leader because I can unite the Conservative Party and reverse Starmer’s landslide.”
