Israeli Defense Minister Yoav Gallant called Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s claims of “total victory” “disgusting” during a secret meeting with the Knesset’s Foreign Affairs and Defense Committee in Tel Aviv on Monday, according to Tally Gotliv , who was present.

As reported by The Jerusalem Post, Tally Gotliv said that he was particularly “shocked” by Gallant’s position and that he called Netanyahu and suggested that he be fired.

Gallant’s comment came as part of his argument for the hostage swap deal. According to a Defense Department statement, Gallant told committee members that recent military successes opened the window for a hostage deal that would allow the defense system to survive. Gallant was quoted as saying Israel was “at a crossroads” between a deal to return the hostages, a ceasefire in Gaza and de-escalation on the northern front, rather than continuing to pound Hamas but not giving back hostages and then complete the war against Hezbollah and possibly Iran.

Gallant said he supported the second option. According to Gallant, the Prime Minister’s slogan of “total victory” was a “battle drumbeat” that was not supported by action. Thus he criticizes Netanyahu as well as far-right ministers Bezalel Smotrich and Itamar Ben-Gvir, who have called for all-out war, including an invasion of Lebanon.
