Typhoon Yagi, the strongest to hit Asia this year, weakened to a tropical storm today after hitting northern Vietnam, China’s Hainan province and the Philippines, killing dozens of people, according to preliminary reports.

The Civil Defense Service of Philippinesthe first country to be hit by Yagi after it formed last week, today increased its death toll at 20 from 16 and reported that it still the fate of 22 people is unknown.

Yagi claimed the life of four people on the southern Chinese island of Hainanaccording to the latest updated information from local authorities.

Fourteen people have been killed so far in Vietnamreportedly including four from a landslide in Hoa Binh province, about 100 kilometers south of Hanoi.

The government said the storm had killed at least three people in Hanoi, a city of 8.5 million, noting that the toll was provisional.

A 53-year-old motorcyclist was killed when a tree fell on him in the northern province of Hai Duong, state media reported. At least one body was recovered from the sea near the coastal city of Halong, where the fate of dozens of people at sea remains unknown and rescue operations were due to begin today, conditions permitting.

Vietnam’s weather service announced a weakening today but warned there were still risks of flooding and landslides as the storm, the strongest to hit the country in decades, moved west.
