“Three members of the police force were killed and a civilian was injured in an attack carried out by gunmen in Mirzaweh, Sistan-Baluchistan province,” the IRNA news agency explained.
Three policemen were killed Thursday in southeastern Iran in an attack claimed by a jihadist group active in the region, official media reported.
“Three members of the police force were killed and a civilian was injured in an attack carried out by gunmen in Mirzaweh, Sistan-Baluchistan province,” the IRNA news agency explained.
Sistan-Baluchistan, one of Iran’s poorest regions, is home to a large part of the Baloch minority, which belongs to Sunni Islam, while the citizens of the Islamic Republic are predominantly Shia.
The police officers were at a gas station when they were “attacked by the unknown gunmen,” according to IRNA.
The Pakistan-based Sunni jihadist group Jaish al-Adl (“Army of Justice” in Arabic), which operates in southeastern Iran, claimed responsibility for the Telegram attack.
On August 23, the head of the criminal investigation department in Hass, in the same province, was killed by gunmen in front of his house, an action claimed by the same organization.
In April, ten members of Iran’s law enforcement forces were killed in two attacks that specifically targeted a police station in the area. Jaish al-Adl claimed responsibility.
